What I've been working on

Lately, I submitted 2 art quilts for consideration in two separate exhibits. Fingers crossed!!

Now that that's done, I've been finishing up some flowers and leaves, which I am about to send to Pokey for the "community garden" that will be at Quilt! Knit! Stitch! in Portland this August. I think the garden is such a clever idea. I confess that my flowers were started for other projects.

Recently I sewed together the six wedges of my snowflake quillt. I'm excited about it. Notice that smaller snowflakes are going into the circle shapes, also done with different techniques. I still need to add fabric at the corners to turn it into a rectangle quilt, not a hexagon quilt.

Here it is with crocheted and tatted snowflakes added in the circles and center. I will sew them on later if I use them. I made these in the 70's!



Here's a detail of the sunpainted mini snowflake. I made it by first cutting out a paper snowflake and placing it on wet painted fabric (Setacolor), then letting it dry. Presto!

I made each wedge using a different process. I used freezer paper templates, both positive and negative, to enable each process, including applique, sun painting, discharge, glue resist, and stenciling. This is an unusual way for me to make a quilt, and I must say I'm enjoying it.

I had a huge urge to sew baby clothing this week, in between quilting and other stuff.

As a last minute impulse, I embroidered around one bird in the middle of the pocket. I think it's a nice little touch.

I don't know what possessed me to dab extra fabric dye onto this t-shirt for Sam. I wonder if they'll actually put it on her?

I also am putting together this little sundress. Notice there is piping. This is an experiment in attempting to enlarge the tiny sundress pattern from last summer. I hope it will fit Samantha, fingers are crossed.

Lastly, here is a fabric postcard made by Del Thomas. I bought it at the AAQI auction, and it arrived yesterday. It reminded me of my Grandma Noble, who loved to grow flowers, and her favorite color was yellow.

recent work

I'm busily working on two small quilts: one for Habitat for Humanity, the other for Flying Geese Quilting Guild auction. The former should be done in a couple days, and I'll post a photo after that. Here's a work-in-progress photo of the FG auction piece.

My plan is to add buttons to it, something like this.

I don't think I've posted this yet! Yet another sweater for my granddaughter Samantha, so that she will be warm in NY when it turns cold. This came from Tina Barrett's book, Natural Knits for Babies and Toddlers. The directions for the booties have me stumped for now. Maybe I'll still do them, if I figure it out.

An Artful Tour of Atlanta

We went to Atlanta recently to visit my daughter and her husband and, of course, their adorable dachshund Ginger. Our son was there, too, and I won't bore you with the family photos I took. Here are a few Atlanta photos on the artsy side. (I know, it's not a proper artful tour of Atlanta without the High Museum, but we didn't go there this time)

The Aquarium in Atlanta is awesome, and the see-through tunnel through the giant fish tank inspired lots of photo snapping. Maybe a fish themed quilt will come of them?

My daugher and husband live in the Cabbagetown neighborhood of Atlanta. The original residents were workers in the nearby textile mill. Times have changed and the neighborhood has evolved, but it is still charming. The textile mill is now condos. Nearby is an area the graffiti artists can't resist. Here's an example (sorry, it's a little blurry).

I can't believe I didn't think to take a photo of any of the beautiful blossoming trees in Atlanta! Cherry, dogwood, peach, and more. So here's a photo of a bush in our front yard here in Irvine, California. The name of the bush is "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow." I think the dark purple blossoms are yesterday, the lavender ones are today, and the white ones are tomorrow. Pretty, huh?
