On Butterfly Wings and other things...

I recently got a wake-up call. I went with Joanell to the Oceanside Museum of Art where she was dropping off a quilt (as part of an exhibit including quilts from Dairy Barn! Lucky her!). When my friend happened to mention to the curator that I had had a quilt in Quilt Visions at her museum, I said "In 2002." Her wide-eyed response was that that was a really long time ago. She was young, and 10 years ago she could have been 15, who knows? But it shook me up a bit. What have I done lately?

Well, I have continued to make art quilts, although I have slowed down. I have other interests, as anyone who reads this blog would know.  Having a granddaughter has given me a different focus, and I have taken up knitting and making little clothing with gusto. Do I regret this? Of course not. I would hate to be so busy making art quilts that I wouldn't have time to make things for her. I am going to savor watching her grow up, and that's that. Quilts are still in the picture, when I can and want to make them.

My old friend Pat Raffee (Pat, are you out there?) gave me some advice during another moment of self-doubt, and I have had a few over the years. She said something like, make what pleases you. If you only make quilts that you hope will please judges and others, you end up with a pile of quilts that you may not even like. This advice has served me well over the years, so thank you, Pat. I will continue to make what pleases me.

Now I'm going to go upstairs to work on butterfly wings that Samantha can wear for Halloween. (tutorial will happen, eventually) In the meantime, here's a video to enjoy.

This is a precious video of my grandchild playing with a soccer ball with her great aunt Marti. The owl hat is something I made as a Christmas gift, and it's been a hit.

Art Quilts Defined, and At the Zoo

This is the new definition announced by SAQA. Nice, huh? I guess my quilts still qualify. I promise to post new work soon. I just need to figure out the border.

I've been taking my time downloading videos from our trip in May. Here is one of them, finally. It's Samantha at about 11 months, standing, crawling, talking, etc. You might be able to see her first tooth.

I couldn't resist sharing this jubilant photo of my granddaughter. I am told she is eating a bit of ice cream, which she is mad for. Look at those big eyes! 

Here she is in her new swing, another thing she loves. The fields behind her are yellow from dandelions, and you can see heifers in the background. This is Midstate NY.

Last but not least, here is the latest video. Samantha is being swung by her Grandma Lynn. It's short but cute.

This is the last video that I made while my granddaughter was visiting at our house (yes, her mom and dad were here, too). It's too fun to keep it to myself.  It's as if she can't decide what to do next: clap? wave? try to crawl? practice making various noises? play with big red cuddly dog? The cuddler dog was a gift from her cousin Alex and his family.

There's not a lot going on in this one, other than my grandbaby sitting there staring at the camera and looking adorable. Cute ending. This is another one that I made while she was here in California. So nice that the weather cooperated and that she could wear a sundress on this day.
